My name is Claire Newkirk and I am a student at Wilmington College. I am a criminal justice and psychology major. This is my second year of college but I am a senior and will be graduating in May. On campus, I am involved in the Quaker Activities Council where we work to plan the major student events, the Asian American Student Association, the theatre program, peer mentoring, the Office of Mission, Purpose, and Value, and more. Currently, I am an intern at Child Protective Services and I plan to pursue a career in either law enforcement or a related public service field. I have always had a passion for helping and protecting children. When I am not a student, I enjoy scary movies, playing with my cat, Winston, being creative, all types of music, being with friends, and being spontaneous. I am very excited for this opportunity to continue my education and get my degree.
Naturally, I was extremely shocked to find out that I won this scholarship. I believe that more often than not, it takes a village to support a person into success. I have received so much support from my family, friends, and the school. I am extremely grateful to be able to add Schaffer & Associates to that group. Winning this scholarship has relieved some financial burden for me and will allow me to focus more on my academics and professional development. Not only will this scholarship help me, it will also affect every person I am able to help and support once I graduate. I did not think that I would win this scholarship but I am so appreciative that I did. I am also grateful to Schaffer & Associates for investing in mine and other students’ educations.
My name is Melanie Timmins, and I am an aspiring first-generation attorney, currently completing my Master of Public Health with a concentration in Health Equity at Boston University. I plan to attend law school in the fall to continue building a dynamic career that aligns public-interest law, disability rights, and public health.
I was born in southern California, but I grew up in Oregon, where the Pacific Northwest nourished my love for hiking, reading, photography, and painting. Outside of my academic and professional work, I enjoy pursuing new creative projects, such as hand knitting blankets or writing children’s books for my nephews. I find joy in cooking and baking for my friends and family, especially around the holidays, and I am always excited to learn a new recipe.
My commitment to public service stems from my educational background, where I have dedicated my time to reducing barriers in access to healthcare for vulnerable populations. I am passionate about advocacy and addressing systemic inequities through law and policy. Often, you can find me volunteering with organizations that advance community health and advocate for justice.
I am genuinely honored to be selected as Schaffer & Associates LPA Social Security Disability Advocacy Scholarship recipient. This recognition strengthens my commitment to improving equitable access for vulnerable individuals navigating Social Security Disability benefits. While I finish my Master of Public Health program, this scholarship award provides meaningful support in preparing for law school, allowing me to reserve my seat, stay focused on my goals, and honor my late Aunt Becca. I am sincerely grateful for this investment in my education as I build a career dedicated to law, advocacy, and justice.
