How Is Social Security Disability Calculated in Ohio?

Before your benefits are calculated, the SSA needs to determine if your application fits specific criteria. Whether you apply online or in person, the process is the same. The criteria considered include financial and disability requirements, the number of years worked, and any current work activities.

In terms of financial and disability requirements, you must meet the following:

  • You cannot be gainfully employed.
  • An official medical diagnosis of an impairment or condition must be shown to interfere with your ability to be gainfully employed.
  • Your condition or disability must be expected to last at least 12 months.
  • You need to show why you are not unable to perform the work you did prior to your injury, illness, or condition.
  • As a result of a lack of education, training, or physical or mental disability, you cannot perform any other type of work.
  • You must have sufficient work credits, which are earned by working in positions covered by Social Security.

If you meet the necessary criteria, the SSA then decides whether you are eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits (SSDIB) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSDIB is for individuals who worked, but are no longer able because of an injury or diagnosis. SSI is for people who have not worked recently and have low income and resources. In 2022, the maximum monthly SSDIB payment is $3,345, and the maximum monthly SSI payment is $841.

In addition to federal benefits, you may also be eligible for state benefits. In Ohio, state benefits include Medicaid, food assistance, and Ohio Works First. Your Findlay attorney will explain your options and what makes sense for your situation.

Can I Apply for Disability If I’m Already on Social Security?

The SSD process is complex, and everybody’s situation is unique. You may be in a position where you are currently receiving Social Security when you become disabled. What happens next? Our lawyers are here to answer your questions.

Our Findlay workers’ compensation attorneys understand the challenges individuals with disabilities face. When you hire us, we will walk you through the claims process step by step. In the event your claim is denied, we can also help you navigate the appeals process to have the decision overturned so you can receive the benefits you need.
